Really interesting post. At Wistia, we've been with Slicehost and Rackspace since we started and can't say enough good things about them.

It's amazing how something that might have once started as a fairly straightforward app can grow into an extremely complex set of interconnected systems each with unique hosting requirements. I'm looking forward to your post describing your new server architecture.

Hope the migration is going (or has gone) smoothly!

Hi Alex,
not sure if this is the right question. But does Rackspace helps in moving all your server data and applications..as it is...OR do we need to check with one of our application supplier before moving data. (my main concern is our app. would be moving from a 32 bit to 64 bit). can anyone suggest. Thanks!

@Alex: At first we were, but we tested things well and built it into our migration script. Setting up our environment properly from the start turned out to be a better decision overall. It will also avoid a post-migration migration :)

I'm surprised you guys decided to make changes to your app at the same time that you are moving to a new host. Aren't you afraid that could cause complications?

We use rackspace as a developement/product server for our project. We also heavily use beanstalks FTP release feature for our repositories. Sounds like only good things for us. Thanks for the great work.

About a year ago we moved from MediaTemple to Slicehost (one of Rackspace's child companies); we've been very happy. I have nothing but praise for Rackspace, I think you'll be really pleased that you did this move.
